2023 State of the Future of Work report
It's not good news, but the stats confirm what we've been hearing anecdotally – many Australian workers are exhausted, unwell, and at risk of quitting.
The University of Melbourne's newly released 2023 State of the Future of Work Report on Australia’s workforce is a sobering snapshot for employers banking on a productive future.
Amongst workers aged 18-54 years:
-
1-in-2 feel exhausted
-
40% are less motivated
-
33% have difficulty concentrating
-
1-in-3 are considering quitting
“Australian workplaces must prioritise workers’ wellbeing in the recovery, [and] provide greater support in addressing burnout and mental distress.”
Dr Brendan Churchill, Report co-author
There's no recovery without wellbeing
The message for employers is clear – people need greater support to recover from the ongoing effects of the pandemic.
After a decade of designing workplace health and productivity programs, we know that people need real support to rebuild their vitality. We also know that effective leadership and building a culture of care are essential to sustained workforce resilience.
Teams with resilient leaders are 30% more resilient and have 50% less burnout.
Support a high-performance culture of care
Crafting a wellness-first high-performance culture is a holistic undertaking that requires slow thinking and intentional action. When business as usual is relentless and demanding it's hard to find the bandwidth to address these issues, even when you know they impact your organisation's success.
