Ten Great Freedoms | Timeless wisdom for adaptable leaders
Apr 17, 2025Navigating leadership with wisdom and adaptability requires real courage.
This includes examining the contours of our inner landscape that unconsciously shape our reactions and behaviours. Recognising and unlearning outdated ways of seeing and being takes honesty and effort.
The poster below, 10 Great Freedoms, is inspired by my late father, author and psychotherapist, Bill Longridge. From releasing the need for approval to making others feel safe and valued, they remind us of the shared challenges we grapple with when leading ourselves and supporting others. We are all a great work in progress.
The salve of common humanity
In recognising our humanness, can we bring greater compassion into the workplace? The evidence indicates that modelling compassion is not just a desirable trait in leadership - it's critical (1). The proven benefits include greater stress resilience and well-being, deeper social connection and engagement, and lower rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout.
