We've all done an experiential 'PhD' in navigating uncertainty over the last 18 months. While we might be growing our tolerant of unpredictability, our pattern-loving brains still prefer certainty.
Several studies reveal that most people prefer to know what is about to happen, even if it's painful, rather than not know. Research by Archy de Berker's (UCL Institute of Neurology) found that uncertainty can cause more stress than inevitable pain.
If uncertainty is a common stressor, it's highly beneficial for leaders to learn how to reduce this threat. 'Why is uncertainty exhausting' was the theme we explored with 50+ diverse leaders this week.
