Peak Mind book review
Nov 12, 2021While it is great to lose yourself in escapist fiction over the summer, Sharon Longridge Executive Presence Program Director at Monash Business School, recommends that you turn your attention towards the compelling book Peak Mind by neuroscientist Dr Amishi Jha. Here's why...
While books by neuroscientists tend to be attention-grabbing at the moment, Peak Mind wants deserves your focus.
The Director of Contemplative Neuroscience at the University of Miami, Dr Jha runs a laboratory where her team studies the brain systems of attention and working memory. They also measure how these critical cognitive systems are strengthened with mindfulness training.
Peak Mind is both readable and relatable. It powerfully argues why we should tame our wandering, distractible minds. She reveals how we can find focus and ‘own our attention’. The key message of the book is that as little as 12 minutes of mindfulness training 4-5 each week can positively impact your brain’s attentional systems.
As a longtime proponent of mindfulness, especially for leaders, this book is right up my Strasse. Between the pings on your smartphone and interruptions from colleagues, our attention is getting highjacked all the time. The cost to our mental clarity, decision making and stress levels is quantified in this easy-to-read book.
If optimising your mind sounds like it might be beneficial, Peak Mind will confirm your hunch.
